Gay Marriage

Should gay marriage be legal?

Clinton would leave the issue of gay marriage to be decided by individual states.

Remarks by Clinton on CBS's Face the Nation: "Yes, I think that [a ban on gay marriage] be a terrible step backwards. It would be the first time we've ever amended the Constitution to deny rights to people. And I think that should be left to the states... Let the states decide what's in their constitutions, what is in their legislative agendas and let it go forward from there."

McCain would leave the issue of gay marriage to be decided by individual states.

McCain quoted by CNN: "The constitutional amendment [to ban gay marriage] strikes me as antithetical in every way to the core philosophy of Republicans. It usurps from the states a fundamental authority they have always possessed and imposes a federal remedy for a problem that most states do not believe confronts them."

Obama would leave the issue of gay marriage to be decided by individual states.

Remarks by Obama during a speech in the U.S. Senate: "I agree with most Americans, with Democrats and Republicans, with Vice President Cheney, with over 2,000 religious leaders of all different beliefs, that decisions about marriage, as they always have, should be left to the states."

Paul would leave the issue of gay marriage to be decided by individual states.

From an article written by Paul: "The definition of marriage- a union between a man and a woman- can be found in any dictionary. It's sad that we need government to define an institution that has existed for centuries. The best approach to complex social problems, as always, is to follow the Constitution. This means Congress should restrict federal court jurisdiction when necessary, and social matters should be left up to states under the Ninth and Tenth amendments."
